And Still I Dream

"We have come this far by faith"

A work of art that Edwin Lester's Uncolored series.Ā A series about color without color. It depicts the historical struggles of African Americans in the United States as they worked for freedom, justice, and equality.

This work of art depicts a young African American child holding to their dreams and keeping the faith that there is more to life, more to achieve and that everything is still in front of them. They have the same dream of their ancestors who worked to make it better for the next generation upon whose backs we all stand including the first African American to occupy the White House as president of the United States.

In the child's hands are a bible which represents faith and the a chess piece, a King which represents the dream and alludes to Dr. Martin Luther King and his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

This work of art was also inspired by scripture as written inĀ Isaiah 40, verses 4 and 5:

ā€œEvery valley shall be exalted,Ā And every mountain and hill brought low;Ā The crooked places shall be made straightĀ And the rough places smooth;Ā The glory of the Lord shall be revealed,Ā And all flesh shall see it together;Ā For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.ā€ - Isaiah 40: 4-5
