This tradition began during slavery when African American women who worked as household servants or in fields would put aside their plain uniforms and replace them with their vibrant finery to wear to church.

Church crowns and clothing uplifted their spirits and improved their self-worth. It was a reminder that we are truly free, radiant, and victorious in Christ.
